  • Manual wheelchairs are ideal in situations when you have trouble walking but need to maneuver yourself around to maintain your independence. You can use wheelchairs independently or with the assistance of a caretaker pushing you from the behind.

There are many different features to a manual wheelchair depending on your need and use. They are foldable and come with braking systems to ensure safety when getting in and out of the wheelchair reducing the risk of further injuries.

At ADAPT Home Health Care, our team always makes sure that you feel safe, comfortable and confident in your choice of mobility equipment. Mobility is key when it comes to helping you feel confident and promoting your independence. Our team is dedicated to assessing your needs and finding you suitable solutions for purchase or rent.

Heavy duty wheelchairs are built for a higher weight capacity and are wider in width. They are equipped with more load bearing gears and material to be able to move with grace and freedom. You can use wheelchairs independently or with the assistance of a caretaker pushing you from the behind.

Transport chairs are lightweight solutions and an alternative to a traditional manual wheelchair. They are perfect for pushing a loved one around and can be used indoors and outdoors. The biggest difference between a transport chair and a wheelchair is the fact that one can not self-maneuver and that the transport chair must be pushed from the behind.

There are many different styles and features of the transport chairs. The wheel sizes vary making certain models more ideal for indoor use while others suitable for indoor and outdoor use. They are easily foldable and their lighter weight makes it ideal for transport and travel. Each transport chair is equipped with a braking system for safety.

At ADAPT Home Health Care, our team always makes sure that you feel safe, comfortable and confident in your choice of mobility equipment. Mobility is key when it comes to helping you feel confident and promoting your independence.

    Debsza Kormos

My journey with Truscott started in Oct 2016 when I purchased my rollator with them through the Ontario ADP Program.  The HHC staff are courteous, very helpful, understanding & accommodating, with repairs, maintenance, and recommendations.  Truscott rocks 🙂

The kindest staff. The head pharmacist Moos (spelling may be off) is so understanding and cares about the people they serve. Never make me feel guilty for forgetting a refill, will always do what they can do help. Any medication questions I have I know I can trust their advice. Truly thankful for this pharmacy. They've made the medication part of chronic illness easier which makes a huge difference when you live with it. All other staff are friendly and helpful as well. My family and I have been going there for years and hope to never have to change.

We need more places like Truscott I.D.A.  The front staff at the pharmacy greeted us with a smile the minute we walked through the door and directed  to where we needed to go. Thank you to the attentive and knowledgeable staff at Adapt Home Health Care.  ADAPT helped to coordinate a home visit with a licensed OT (Occupational Therapist) for my elderly grandmother and quickly filled the order for her equipment.  This level of customer service is hard to find.

I have been a patient of Maria with ADAPT for over 5 years. I’ve been having problems with my lymphedema and have been fitted with special garments for my hands and a gauntlet for my fingers and I’ve been so satisfied. Maria has been really fantastic and has helped me with all of my ailments and all of my needs. I couldn’t have asked for anything better. Thank you!

    Susmita Mithia

I am a patient at ADAPT Home Health Care.  I use compression stockings because of the swelling in my feet and a lot of swelling and blood circulation issues.  I have used compression stockings for more than 4 years and I always come to ADAPT Health Care to purchase my compression stockings.   The staff here are always very nice and very forthcoming.  Compression stockings are the best for varicose veins and if you are feet are hurting.  Everyone should be wearing them!

How do I choose a wheelchair?

There are a few different factors to evaluate when selecting the best wheelchair for you.  There is no one solution that fits all users.  Picking the most ideal wheelchair will help aid in your comfort, enhance your ability and promote your independence.  The biggest decision that you should make when selecting a wheelchair is whether or not you will be maneuvering yourself around using your hands or if you will require someone to push you from behind.  It’s important to remember that you want to have enough upper dexterity strength in your arms to turn the bigger wheels if you are choosing to navigate yourself around.  If you aren’t going to be steering yourself around, then you might not need a wheelchair and you may be more comfortable in a transport chair.

If you feel that the wheelchair is the best option for you, then we would advise you to assess the following variables before selecting a wheelchair:

    • Your height and weight
    • Type of braking system
    • If you require foot rests or leg extenders
    • Seatbelt requirement

Our team at ADAPT Home Health Care would be happy to help assess your needs and requirements before providing their recommendations on which wheelchairs might be most suitable for you.

How do I know what size wheelchair to buy?

Sizing of wheelchairs is very much dependent on the end user and their specifications.  The biggest variable to evaluate when it comes to size of wheelchairs is understanding the weight capacities.  Wheelchairs are made to be durable and safe for long-term use.  If the end user exceeds the weight restrictions of a specific wheelchair model then this will increase the loads on different parts of the wheelchair which could ultimately damage the product when using it.

Heavy duty wheelchairs are sturdy enough to accomodate any size of an individual; however, these wheelchairs are made with more durable materials making them a lot heavier to transport around if needed.  Therefore, we only recommend the heavy duty wheelchairs for those individuals who require a higher weight capacity.

What is the average cost of a wheelchair?

Wheelchairs vary in price depending on the style and model of the wheelchair you are selecting.  Similar to a car, there are lower end and higher end models of a wheelchair.  These wheelchairs can be individualized based on your needs and how long you might require to use the wheelchair.  Renting could also be an option if you need the wheelchair for short-term use.

Mobility is generally a tax exempt expense in Ontario which helps when having to spend the money!  Also, wheelchairs are often covered by private insurance plans.  During your consultation, our Medical Equipment Specialist can help call your private insurance company with you to determine what coverage options might be available for reimbursement.  We always recommend getting a prescription from your doctor as most private insurance plans require that in our experience!

What’s the best wheelchair to buy?

All of the wheelchairs we carry are approved medical devices.  We highly recommend purchasing your wheelchair from an approved medical equipment vendor as we can ensure that the wheelchair is in safe and working order to prevent further injuries.  We teach you how to use the wheelchair safely and ensure you feel comfortable when you leave with it.

We wouldn’t really say there’s the “best” wheelchair.  What it really boils down to is assessing and understanding what your needs are and catering a solution for that.  There are some products that have a two-in-one feature that some people prefer as it better suits their lifestyle.  Speak to one of our Medical Equipment Specialists so they can understand what your needs are and provide appropriate recommendations and solutions.

Is there government funding for electric scooters?

A very small percentage of the population will qualify for funding of electric scooters through the ADP Program.  There is a long list of eligibility criteria in order to qualify for government funding.  They mainly want to know if this is your only mode of transportation and that you are physically unable to walk.

Electric scooters are the perfect alternative to a vehicle or if you are looking for a quick way to maneuver around your neighborhood or through the grocery store.  They are an approved medical device and there are other funding options available that our Medical Equipment Specialists could determine if you are eligible.  You may be able to claim an electric scooter through your private insurance plan!  Also, mobility aids like electric scooters are exempt from taxes – so there’s a savings component already!

Should I wear a walking aircast boot?

Walking air cast boots are extremely beneficial if you have suffered from a sprained ankle or potential fracture.  They help provide support and help with initiating the recovery process after a sustained injury.  Oftentimes it is hard to see a doctor right away or get an x-ray.  Additionally, if you have sustained an injury you don’t want it to get worse and therefore you should wear an aircast boot right away.

Walking air cast boots come in different sizes and it’s important to make sure it fits your injured foot correctly to prevent further injury and damage.  Air cast boots serve a few purposes and will provide support while providing a hard shell around the injured foot and leg.  The pumped air will provide a level of compression to help reduce the swelling, increase blood circulation to the area and promote recovery.

Air Cast Boots will allow you to walk safely and comfortably.  It keeps you in control and provides you with the support to feel confident while walking and reduce the risk of further injuries.  It’s a small expense in the grand scheme of things and help hold people over until they get the medical attention they need.

Do you know what rollator you need? Don’t hurt yourself.

Let’s make the title a bit more attention grabbing…I’ve given you two examples…
What type of rollator do you need? Free Assessments.
Types of rollators for Specific Conditions & Lifestyles

ADAPT Home Health Care promotes safe mobility practices to reduce the risk of falls and injuries.  Selecting a rollator can be a multi-step process and it’s very important to be able to test multiple rollators to determine which one is best for you.

During our initial appointment, we will perform a brief assessment that will help with selecting a rollator that will last a long time.  During this assessment we will understand:
    Risk of falls
    Type of lifestyle
    Height and weight
    Dexterity challenges
Potential for private insurance and government funding options

Like a car, there are many additional features that you will get to pick from such as additional cushion support in the seat or backrest, basket selection and add-on accessory features for style and comfort.

Our goal is to provide you with options and allow you to pick the best one for you by trialing it around the store.

The difference between a wheelchairs & transport chair

At ADAPT Home Health Care, we want to empower you with knowledge to make an informed decision when selecting a wheelchair or transport chair.  Both are similar but different – and we will help you understand the difference which will impact which one you select.  Our Mobility Equipment Specialists take the following variables into consideration before providing you with their recommendations:
Short term or long term use
    Reason for needing equipment
    Degree of mobility
    Upper arm dexterity
    Indoor or Outdoor need
    Lifestyle
Potential for private insurance and government funding options

Many consumers make the mistake of unknowingly opting for a wheelchair while not understanding all of the available solutions that are often more cost effective than a standard wheelchair.

Our goal is to assess each individual situation and provide the best recommendations accordingly.
