There are a few different factors to evaluate when selecting the best wheelchair for you. There is no one solution that fits all users. Picking the most ideal wheelchair will help aid in your comfort, enhance your ability and promote your independence. The biggest decision that you should make when selecting a wheelchair is whether or not you will be maneuvering yourself around using your hands or if you will require someone to push you from behind. It’s important to remember that you want to have enough upper dexterity strength in your arms to turn the bigger wheels if you are choosing to navigate yourself around. If you aren’t going to be steering yourself around, then you might not need a wheelchair and you may be more comfortable in a transport chair.
If you feel that the wheelchair is the best option for you, then we would advise you to assess the following variables before selecting a wheelchair:
- Your height and weight
- Type of braking system
- If you require foot rests or leg extenders
- Seatbelt requirement
Our team at ADAPT Home Health Care would be happy to help assess your needs and requirements before providing their recommendations on which wheelchairs might be most suitable for you.
How do I know what size wheelchair to buy?
Sizing of wheelchairs is very much dependent on the end user and their specifications. The biggest variable to evaluate when it comes to size of wheelchairs is understanding the weight capacities. Wheelchairs are made to be durable and safe for long-term use. If the end user exceeds the weight restrictions of a specific wheelchair model then this will increase the loads on different parts of the wheelchair which could ultimately damage the product when using it.
Heavy duty wheelchairs are sturdy enough to accomodate any size of an individual; however, these wheelchairs are made with more durable materials making them a lot heavier to transport around if needed. Therefore, we only recommend the heavy duty wheelchairs for those individuals who require a higher weight capacity.

What is the average cost of a wheelchair?
Wheelchairs vary in price depending on the style and model of the wheelchair you are selecting. Similar to a car, there are lower end and higher end models of a wheelchair. These wheelchairs can be individualized based on your needs and how long you might require to use the wheelchair. Renting could also be an option if you need the wheelchair for short-term use.
Mobility is generally a tax exempt expense in Ontario which helps when having to spend the money! Also, wheelchairs are often covered by private insurance plans. During your consultation, our Medical Equipment Specialist can help call your private insurance company with you to determine what coverage options might be available for reimbursement. We always recommend getting a prescription from your doctor as most private insurance plans require that in our experience!

Speak to one of our Medical Equipment Specialists so they can understand what your needs are and provide appropriate recommendations and solutions.

A very small percentage of the population will qualify for funding of electric scooters through the ADP Program. Walking air cast boots are extremely beneficial if you have suffered from a sprained ankle or potential fracture. They help provide support and help with initiating the recovery process after a sustained injury. Oftentimes it is hard to see a doctor right away or get an x-ray. Additionally, if you have sustained an injury you don’t want it to get worse and therefore you should wear an aircast boot right away.
Walking air cast boots come in different sizes and it’s important to make sure it fits your injured foot correctly to prevent further injury and damage. Air cast boots serve a few purposes and will provide support while providing a hard shell around the injured foot and leg. The pumped air will provide a level of compression to help reduce the swelling, increase blood circulation to the area and promote recovery.
Air Cast Boots will allow you to walk safely and comfortably. It keeps you in control and provides you with the support to feel confident while walking and reduce the risk of further injuries. It’s a small expense in the grand scheme of things and help hold people over until they get the medical attention they need.
